Soil consolidation is the improvement of the soil features in situ. Depending on the goal to be achieved by means of the soil consolidation (i.e.: improvement of permeability, increased strength, etc…), the designer has a whole range of techniques available. For instance: drains, grouting, mechanical mixing and dynamic compaction.
It should be always considered that, contrary to what happens with the other types of special foundations, soil consolidation produces an overall improvement of the starting soil. Local unevenesses of the resulting product are therefore implied by any soil improving system.
